Matthew 22
Depending on how you count them (see what you make it!) there are at least 8 references back to the Old Testament in this week’s chapters of Matthew. It seems that his message to his Jewish audience is “Now that we are in the last week of the life of Jesus I want you to be absolutely sure that you see this as the fulfilment of all that the Scriptures have been pointing towards”. Of course we benefit from that same focus as we see the Old and New perfectly joined together in Jesus. Those who came to Jesus with questions were accused (22:29) of “not knowing the Scriptures or the power of God”: it is our privilege to know both if we will submit to them.
