Isaiah 44

Since chapter 40 it is almost as if God has been wooing his people, pointing out to them all he has done for them as his chosen people, his chosen servant, and all that he will be doing for them by way of rescue. In order to underline how different this relationship is from how someone worships an idol, a made-up god, we hear how ridiculous it is that the blacksmith and the carpenter spend so much energy sculpting an idol of their own design that they then declare to be their god (and in the case of the carpenter, using the other bits of wood for the fire to keep himself warm). We wouldn’t do that, would we? We wouldn’t create god in our own image, would we? We wouldn’t declare that ‘God must be like this’, would we?
