The transformations we read about in earlier chapters are now seen to be in evidence amongst the wider family, not just in Joseph. They no longer have a cavalier attitude towards losing one of their brothers. They know they deserve judgement, but instead receive mercy, as again the story points us forward to how we receive the same through the cross of Jesus. Verse 5 shows how much Joseph has grown in his spiritual journey, and it has taken quite a number of years. We may pray for similar transformation, mercy and growth in our lives.
