Isaiah 48
God knows that the wooing of his people is not going to be fruitful. What a wonderful picture of obstinacy: sinews of iron in the neck and a bronze forehead! God wants to woo, but he also has to warn. They need to be aware of the bad news (the warning) before they can appreciate the good news (the wooing), and with each chapter we build up more and more of the picture of how the people cannot fulfil that intention to be the Lord’s servant, to be the ones who bring God’s blessing to the nations. Our attention is being drawn to how there will need to be someone special who can fulfil that intention for them. Answers on a postcard…
