Luke 2
Modern scholarship provides several insights into why shepherds are featured so prominently in the nativity story. As historian Geza Vermes notes, “shepherds occupied the lowest rung of the social ladder in first-century Judea,” highlighting their humble and marginalised status. Their inclusion in the narrative underscores the theme that the good news of Christ’s birth was first announced to ordinary people, rather than the powerful or elite.  According to historian Joachim Jeremias, “the flocks pastured close to Bethlehem were destined for the temple sacrifices in Jerusalem,” which lends symbolic significance to the shepherds’ presence—connecting Jesus, often called the “Lamb of God,” with the sacrificial lambs. This perspective reinforces the themes of humility, sacrifice, and divine favour throughout the story. Additionally, Luke’s Gospel highlights the role of the Holy Spirit, the importance of prayer, and the value of humility and service. The narrative often focuses on those who were marginalised in society, such as women, the poor, and non-Jews, showing that everyone is invited into God’s kingdom. Through his careful storytelling, Luke sought to encourage faith, inspire hope, and strengthen the early Christian community and us.
