2 Samuel 7
The transition of the kingship to the second king, David, did not run smoothly, but chapter 7 shows clearly how this remained God’s plan, which could not be thwarted. This chapter records one of the covenants of the Old Testament: God’s covenant with David. It’s not an agreement between two equals, but is completely lopsided: David wanted to do something special for God (I’ll build you a house, a temple), but God does something even more amazing for David (I’ll build you a house, a dynasty), which finds its ultimate fulfilment in the arrival of God’s chosen king, Jesus. The covenant that Jesus brings in is equally lopsided: full of grace for us, to receive God’s gift of an eternal future. Praise God for his unthwartable plan!
