Romans 6
The chapters this week have been getting us to look back to the foundations of our faith and see that Abraham put his faith in God long before any ceremonies and rituals came, even before the law came through Moses: our faith is likewise based upon God’s promises, not upon law-keeping or religious practices. This is because Jesus is described as ‘the second Adam’ (from the hymn) who, by grace, puts right what Adam put wrong. Some Romans didn’t quite get it and concluded “So, we should sin more in order to see more of God’s grace poured out to us”! Paul draws out that the freedom we have in Jesus is not a freedom to sin, but a freedom to be servants (slaves) of God and find his free gift of eternal life. Read slowly, read carefully!
