2 Corinthians 9
The tough times and awkward relationships that there have been between Paul and his readers have been worked through by the sincerity of their faith. This firm faith is now to be shown in the opportunity for them to be generous. Notice how his language is like a river in full flood (rather than a drip from a tap): he wants them to excel in the grace of giving; he wants them to sow generously, without compulsion, to experience God’s abounding grace, in all things at all times; he wants them to experience being made rich in every way. And yet this is no clever investment strategy (“give to God and he will multiply your wealth”) but a way of ensuring thanksgiving and praise are given to God and his grace overflowing to all. Anyone for generosity?
