1 Samuel 22

This week we begin to read through some of the history books of the Old Testament, and here we have the tangled web of relationships between David (king-in-waiting) and Saul (the first king of the nation, but who has been rejected by God, 13:14) and Jonathan (the son of Saul, whom you would expect to be the successor). The covenant of friendship between David and Jonathan has much to teach us about friendship between men, but also points us to the relationship between Saviour and sinner, as Jonathan yields his position of heir to David: Jonathan willingly steps down in order to acknowledge David as the rightful king. Let’s read this expecting to see Jesus.
