Jeremiah 35
A new covenant is going to be made between God and his people (the Old is described in Jer 11:4) such that God will forgive and forget (31:34). As a sign of this hope, in the midst of the overrunning of their land Jeremiah is told by God to buy a field, since one day that field will be fully his again. The people and the land will be restored, after this period of exile and punishment: God’s great desire is for his people to turn to him in repentance and faith, and to show that by their obedience. This is why the Recabites are honoured. They are a small family who have kept the command they were given. We have the new covenant, the promises of God, his enduring love, his hope of a secure future, his word delivered to us: from this week’s chapters whose example shall we follow?
