Let’s take up the encouragement of 5:40 and be those who both read the Scriptures and come to Jesus for life. We have two more miracles in this week’s readings out of the seven that John chooses to record, which have the job of confirming that the words of Jesus are worth listening to, trusting in and acting upon. They are not merely jolly sayings from a wise teaching or clever orator, they are the very words of life from the ultimate life-giver. Tomorrow’s reading begins with the question “What should we do to fulfil God’s requirements?” and it ends with the startling answer that it’s not about doing anything, but Jesus does tell us what our response should be to enable us to gain eternal life.
