We don’t know very much about Matthias, but it would seem a shame to miss thinking about him in our Faithful Friday slot when we land exactly on his feast day! He was chosen to take the place of Judas as one of the twelve apostles. His qualifying criteria for being on the shortlist were that he had been present for the whole of the 3-year ministry of Jesus and that he could be a witness of the resurrection. We could easily think that those around Jesus were just the original Twelve plus a few women, but this selection of Matthias enables us to realise there were many more unnamed followers with Jesus. If you are someone who thinks of themselves as being “in the background/behind the scenes”, will you respond willingly like Matthias to being called by the Lord into a more prominent role?
