We might easily think that Paul is the only one who writes about Love because of his famous passage (“Love is patient, love is kind…”), but this set of readings brings to us John’s incredibly practical understanding of Love: love in action. All that he writes arises from the desire that his readers will know that their faith in Jesus is concrete and that it results in eternal life as well as a practical love-based life here and now. His concern is that one disciple will help another to stay on track by prayer, by battling away on his behalf in the spiritual struggle that is our present experience. Can we manage to do that for each other?
