Earlier this week we read how David refused to give in to the advice of those around him regarding how easily he could have killed the tyrannical King Saul, and take up his position as the rightful king. David’s strong conviction is that Saul remains the Lord’s anointed (chosen) vessel, even when his behaviour does not match the anointing. Then in today’s reading we have an Amalekite (from a nation David had recently defeated) who tries to ingratiate himself to David with a fabricated story about how he helped to slay King Saul. He has misjudged David’s desire to be king as being greater than his commitment to the Lord’s anointing. Can we learn from David’s patience and work with the Lord’s timing even when we know something is our ‘right’?
